Citizenship for Children, Filing the Derivative Citizenship (N-600) Application, an MMLA Pro Bono Volunteer Training

Topics:
  • Citizenship

This training provides pro bono volunteers with the skills needed to understand basic immigration law and help young people obtain proof of their derivative United States citizenship.

Many new United States citizens have minor children who are unable to apply to become United States citizens on their own because they are under 18. To assist these children in becoming citizens, the United States government offers "derivative" or "acquired" citizenship through a variety of different citizenship laws.

This education session focuses on the basics of citizenship law including who is eligible to "derive" or "acquire" citizenship from their parents and what elements must be proven to become a US citizen by operation of law. Volunteers will learn how to interview clients, how to prepare N-600 citizenship applications, the mechanics of filing applications with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service, and the best methods of proving that an individual is eligible for citizenship when specific evidence is missing.

This training is required for individuals interested in volunteering as part of Legal Aid's Pro Bono Citizenship program.

Registration required. Please register at least 3 days in advance of the Program. To learn more about the session or to register, please contact 612-746-3705 or probono@mylegalaid.org
