N-600 Citizenship Law Training

Topics:
  • Citizenship

In this training, interested attorneys and paralegals will learn about derivative Citizenship and how to prepare and file the N-600, Application for Certificate of Citizenship.

Under US Immigration Law, citizenship is acquired either by blood or by statute. Under statute, permanent residents who are 18 years of age or older file an N-400 application and are interviewed by United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) officers before becoming United States citizens. At the moment permanent resident parents become citizens, their children - those meeting specific legal requirements- also become citizens by operation of law. However, these children are not entitled to receive a Certificate of Citizenship or a US Passport without filing additional applications.

This 1.5 hour training will provide an overview of derivative citizenship law, both as it is now with the Child Citizenship Act of 2000, and relevant older laws. It will also discuss how to prepare and file the N-600 application and how to help families apply for US passports. The training is preparation for taking a case through MMLAs Pro Bono Child Citizenship project. (A workshop will be held on August 23).
