  • Housing Law

Landlords have to make accommodations in their rules, procedures, or policies that allow persons with disabilities equal use and enjoyment of housing. However, these changes must also be reasonable. This training will provide the information you need to know to successfully advocate for clients with disabilities requesting reasonable accommodations in housing. Lael Robertson, supervising attorney of MMLA's Housing Discrimination Law Project, will provide an overview of reasonable accommodations under the Fair Housing Act, including the definition of "disability" under the Americans with Disabilities Act, and how to make an effective reasonable accommodation request.

This presentation will also highlight how service animals are treated under the law, and explain the difference between a reasonable modification and accommodation, providing examples of both. With an overview of relevant Minnesota case law, common defenses, and strategies and tips for effective advocacy, this training equips participants with the tools they need to represent clients in this area of high need.
