SUMMARY:Consumer Debt Defense Part II
LOCATION:
DESCRIPTION:This CLE is a joint program between MCJP and V
LN. This CLE will provide pro bono attorneys with
a brief overview of how to advise low-income clien
ts who have had one or more judgments entered agai
nst them. Many consumers who have defaulted on deb
ts don’t realize that they have been sued and lost
a lawsuit until money is goes missing from their
bank accounts or paychecks. A surprised judgment d
ebtor who was not expecting their money to go miss
ing often desperately wants to know how they can g
et their money back and stop further collection ac
tion from occurring. This CLE will focus on helpin
g pro bono attorneys identify exemptions that a cl
ient may have to claim in response to garnishment
of earnings and financial institution accounts as
well as providing an overview of how to vacate jud
gments entered in Conciliation Court and entered i
n District Court in Minnesota. This will be a free
, one-hour CLE, and 1.0 standard CLE credit will b
 e applied for.
