N-400 Citizenship Workshop

Topics:
  • Citizenship

Have you ever wanted to work with immigrants? Wondering how the citizenship process works, and how you could help eligible clients apply to become new citizens of the United States? Then this opportunity is for you.

Legal Aid offers monthly workshop opportunities for volunteers to meet with pre-screened clients in a group setting. These workshops, generally held at a local community organization, allow for new volunteers and returning volunteers to come together and prepare client applications in a single session. Pre-screened clients come to the workshop prepared to meet with the volunteer and complete the application process.

Over the 3-4 hours of the workshop, volunteers prepare the necessary N-400, Application for Naturalization, as well as any eligible fee waiver documents. Legal Aid staff attorneys review the applications and file the applications with the USCIS. Following the workshop, Legal Aid notifies the volunteer attorney of the interview date, and provides the volunteer with any requested assistance in preparing the client for the interview.

Workshops are held every month. Attending a volunteer education session is required for anyone interested in participating in the project. (A training will be held on July 10).

*Cases generally take 1 year from start to finish. Plan on 8-10 hours of work per case, including 3 hours at the initial workshop.

*Legal Aid offers Citizenship workshops through our Minneapolis and St. Cloud offices.
