Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid Citizenship Workshop

MMLA offers a monthly citizenship workshop for low income clients attending Citizenship classes through the Minneapolis Public Schools.

Volunteer attorneys and paralegals attending the workshop meet with an applicant who is pre-screened by MMLA staff to verify eligibility for citizenship. Volunteers work with the individual to complete the N-400 and any fee waiver or reduced fee applications necessary to file the application with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service. Attorneys complete the applications at the afternoon workshop, and once finalized the application is filed. Pro Bono attorneys who prepare the applications are asked to represent the immigrant at the applicant's citizenship interview before the local USCIS officer in Minneapolis, MN.

This project is a great introduction to citizenship law and general immigration practice. Clients come prepared to work with the attorney to draft and finalize all forms necessary for citizenship. A pre-workshop training is mandatory for all volunteers who do not have experience with this type of immigration work.

For more information, or to register for the workshop or the training, typically held 2 weeks prior to the workshop, please contact MMLA Pro Bono Director, Kirsten Olson.
