The National Pro Bono Celebration, sponsored by the American Bar Association Standing Committee on Pro Bono and Public Service, is scheduled for the week of October 23-29, 2011. It is a coordinated effort to showcase the work and impact of pro bono lawyers across the country. The week is also dedicated to encouraging pro bono service by lawyers to meet the increasing need for representation of low-income and vulnerable clients in civil legal matters.

As part of the National Pro Bono Celebration, the Minnesota State Bar Association is coordinating a series of civil legal clinics, continuing legal education programs and celebrations across the state to honor the work of Minnesota lawyers who provide pro bono representation throughout the year, and to highlight opportunities for pro bono service to those who cannot afford legal assistance.

Description: A criminal record can prevent a person from obtaining a job or safe housing. In Minnesota, not only are conviction records easily accessible, but records such as arrests without charge, dismissals and acquittals are also publicly available and are used against applicants for jobs and housing. This session will discuss the collateral consequences of criminal records on low-income Minnesotans, give an overview of current expungement law, including recent appellate case law, and introduce attorneys to an online automated tool available for attorneys working
on pro bono expungement cases. The presenters will go step by step through the expungement process in Minnesota.
