Adult Field Services is responsible to the court for pre-sentence investigations and for supervising adults on probation. Staff work to ensure that offenders are accountable for their behavior while protecting the rights of victims and enhancing public safety. Volunteers assist probation officers with pretrial investigations, conditional release, misdemeanor and felony investigations, Drug Court services, the property court calendar, etc. Good writing and interviewing skills are essential. Volunteers also play a vital role in more traditional supervision of probationers, including specialization in domestic abuse, sex offenses, theft, chemical dependency, etc. Family Court Services has helped parents for over 45 years by being innovators in providing custody and visitation mediation. Upon Court Order, Family Court Services also conducts evaluations. The evaluator's recommendation helps the Court decide the custody arrangement and visitation schedule. Family Court Services volunteers assist counselors by conducting initial interviews and, with training, conducting mediations. Experienced volunteers may carry a small caseload. These opportunities are for the lawyer who wants to get an insider's view of how probation works or to experience a different arena of the criminal justice system. Volunteer opportunities also exist in management or research, assisting a program manager or training director. Volunteers receive mileage and parking reimbursement. An initial general orientation and ongoing training are provided.
