Central MN Legal Services Volunteer Attorney Program/St. Cloud Area

The Central Minnesota Legal Services Volunteer Attorney Program-St. Cloud covers Benton, Chisago, Isanti, Mille Lacs, Morrison, Sherburne, Stearns, and Todd counties. Attorneys agree to represent clients who are financially eligible for the local legal services program but are outside the local program staff priorities or who represent a conflict of interest for these offices. The biggest need for attorneys is in the family law and consumer/debt collections bankruptcy areas; however, employment discrimination, tort defense, landlord/tenant issues, real estate problems, wills, and guardianships are also referred to volunteers. Volunteers may also be asked to present CLE seminars for local attorneys. The program provides malpractice coverage for VAP cases, at least one free CLE per year in St. Cloud, either live or video, plus access to other CLEs in the Twin Cities, and a program newsletter. Many written materials are available as well as the option to get information from legal services staff on various poverty law issues. Participants have access to online support through the website www.ProJusticeMn.org. Volunteers take as many cases as they feel comfortable taking each year. Law students may do research and writing projects for the program. Volunteers are needed who are willing to work with clients whose primary language is other than English including American Sign.
