Debtor/Creditor Clinic Established by St. Cloud VAP Program

Central Minnesota Legal Services' St. Cloud office received a generous $1,500 contribution from the Bankruptcy Section of the Minnesota State Bar Association. The funds helped to establish a Debtor/Creditor Clinic for St. Cloud area clients. The clinic, modeled after a successful program at the Volunteer Lawyers Network in Minneapolis, began December 10. Volunteer attorneys will advise low-income clients twice each month during the lunch hour clinic. These clients have problems with creditors but are not good candidates for bankruptcy because state law already protects them from the enforcement of judgments by these same creditors. Clients are also protected by the Federal Consumer Protection Act and Fair Debt Collections Act. The volunteer attorneys will assist clients in asserting their rights under these state and federal statutes. Thanks goes to Steve Creasey, Bankruptcy Section chair and Dorraine Larison, partner at Gray Plant Mooty and former Section chair, for their efforts in establishing this clinic. Attorneys interested in joining the clinic may contact Dorraine Larison at dorraine.larison@gpmlaw.com or Sarah Shella-Stevens at sshella-stevens@centralmnlegalstc.org.
