Legal Aid quietly gives a hand to people in need
I recently had the opportunity to testify at the local town-hall meeting of the Legislature. The purpose of my testimony was to encourage continued funding for Civil Legal Services to support the important work that is done to provide access to the justice system. I am a private attorney, having lived and worked in the Albert Lea area for over 13 years. My practice focuses primarily on business related issues, together with work in agricultural law, real estate and family law. Since moving to Albert Lea, I have taken an active interest in finding ways to make our community prosper in a positive way. Read more.
Federal Courts React to Tide of Pro Se Litigants
In response to a growing tide of pro se litigants in federal courts, legal centers in at least three districts have been set up to provide services and advice to parties who represent themselves in civil cases. Read more.

March 27th: The New ADA: The ADA Act Amendments (Video)
A comprehensive overview of the new ADA Amendments Act, including: New definitions for actual and "regarded as" disability; Decisions the amendments specifically overturn; Likely impact on the workplace. Plus, a quick summary of what remains unchanged. Learn more.
April 2nd: The New FMLA
On November 17, 2008, the U.S. Department of Labor issued more than 750 pages of text associated with the new FMLA regulations. This session distills that information into a thoughtful overview of the new regulations, alerts you to changes of significance, and provides necessary context by identifying the topics of significance that did not change. Learn more.
April 20th & 21st: Immigration Law
This one- and one half-day training will focus on pathways to legal status for victims of crimes. The first full day will focus on the complex legal practices of filing for U-Visas, T-Visas, cancellation of removal, and adjustment of status for crime victims. The second half day will provide a multi-disciplinary approach to obtaining legal status for victims of crimes that will be especially useful for advocates and law enforcement, as well as attorneys. April 24th, 2009: Housing Law Seminar
This year, the Minnesota Legal Services Coalition joins the Volunteer Lawyers Network to present a housing law CLE. The training will include a half-day session on private landlord-tenant law and a half-day session on foreclosure defense. Participants can register for either one or both sessions. Further details will soon be available on the MLSC training calendar.
