Right to Counsel in Civil Protection Order and other Civil Domestic Violence Cases

Participant Eligibility: Advocates and attorneys for battered women, sexual assault survivors, stalking victims who are employed by community based organizations. State DV and SA coalition staff and direct service providers. Attorneys in private practice, Legal services and LAV programs. Judges and court personnel. Bar Association staff.

Faculty: Beverly Balos, J.D., is a clinical professor of law emerita at the University of Minnesota Law School and a visiting professor of law at Seattle University Law School. She wrote the leading law review article on the right to counsel in civil domestic violence cases. Beverly will speak about the RTC in civil protection order proceedings.
Margaret Drew, J. D., is a Professor of Clinical Law and Director of the Domestic Violence and Civil Protection Order Clinic at the University Of Cincinnati College of Law. Margaret is a former chair of the American Bar Association's Commission on Domestic Violence and remains special advisor to the Commission. She is the commission's liaison to the ABA's Civil Gideon Workgroup. Margaret will discuss the ABA's Model Access Act.
Juliet Holmes-Smith, J.D., is the Project Director of Volunteer Lawyers Project in Portland, ME. Juliet will talk about the development of VLP, its partnerships and the recruitment and retention of volunteer attorneys (in a small city).
